US restricts editing of Iranian papers

Staff of US science journals cannot edit papers by authors in Iran without a licence, the US Treasury Department has ruled. The new policy is part of the country’s trade embargo on Iran, in place since 1997.

The development came to light after the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) contacted the government to clarify its position on publishing papers from Iran.

Reviewing submissions, or publishing them unedited, requires no licence. Some societies have branded the ruling ‘nonsensical’ for targeting the correction of grammar and syntax, when the content is the vital element.
