A US decision to refuse a visa to a leading Indian chemist may have damaged scientific relations between the two countries. 

Goverdhan Mehta, who is a scientific advisor to the Indian prime minister, was denied a visa because of suspicions that his work could be used to develop chemical weapons.

The move has further embittered Indian scientists, some of whom have already decided to stop visiting the United States altogether having had similar experiences themselves.

Mehta, who is also president of the International Council for Science, says that if the United States wants to collaborate with Indian scientists it must stop humiliating them.

C. N. R. Rao, the Indian prime minister's main science advisor, agrees that the visa application process should be revised.
