Satellites boost Ebola research

From this month, satellites provided by the European Space Agency will help researchers at the International Centre for Medical Research in Franceville, Gabon, to study Ebola outbreaks.

Ebola is an elusive condition. Its mechanism of transition is unknown, and it often occurs in inaccessible areas. Researchers hope that satellite mapping of changes in vegetation and other factors will identify a climatic trigger for the disease.

The study will concentrate on the Gabon/Congo region, which has been hit by eight Ebola outbreaks since 1994.
