Pan-African maths institute opens its doors

An African mathematics institute that will provide free postgraduate diploma courses to students from across the continent will open this week in Cape Town, South Africa.

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), which received US$150,000 from the International Council of Scientific Unions, will recruit teaching expertise from around the world. So far, more than 100 academics have volunteered to lecture there.

Thirty students from 15 African countries have won places at the institute, which seeks to reduce the flight of scientific talent from Africa by offering an attractive alternative to overseas institutions.
