New US visa policy planned for foreign scientists

The United States is expected to revise its visa policy for foreign students and scientists, according to a report in this week's issue of Science. The new regulations will reduce delays for international scholars seeking to re-enter the country.

Currently, researchers applying for a re-entry visa must undergo a security review if their clearance was granted more than 12 months ago. The new plans, which have yet to be finalised, will extend the validity of security clearances beyond 12 months, and possibly for the extent of their study or academic appointment.

The US Department of Homeland Security says that the change is made possible by improved measures for monitoring individuals as they enter and leave the country.
