International Foundation for Science appoints new director

A Swedish development expert, Michael Ståhl, has been named as the new director of the International Foundation for Science (IFS) as of 1 July 2002.
The IFS, which aims to help developing-country scientists to conduct research on the sustainable management of biological resources, is an international non-governmental organisation based in Stockholm, Sweden.
Ståhl, who is leaving the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA) to take up his new position, has more than 30 years' experience in international development co-operation, with special focus on research and capacity building.
He succeeds Thomas Rosswall, who left IFS at the end of 2001 to head the International Council for Science (ICSU) in Paris.
