Tanzania is set to receive financial and technical aid — including science and technology based assistance — from India. The Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa, made the announcement during a visit by Indian president Abdul Kalam last week.

Hailing India's technological prowess, Mkapa said it was an inspiration and a guide for Tanzania's own social, economic and scientific development. He added that Indian intermediate technologies were well-tested and were very much needed in less developed countries.

Kalam said India would be willing — among other things — to share expertise in hybrid varieties of rice and maize, and that the two countries could collaborate on power generation ventures. The assistance will be provided as part of India's 'Focus Africa' programme, which includes six other African nations.
