China develops multi-strain test for bird flu

Source: Xinhua

30 April 2004 | EN

Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough in the control of bird flu by developing a rapid, multiple-strain test for the avian influenza virus.

Previous tests have been able to detect bird flu subgroups only one at a time. But the Chinese tool can simultaneously detect the H5, H7 and H9 subgroups of the virus.

The test kit has applications for poultry quarantine, human disease control and epidemiological investigations, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
