Nanotechnology has taken off in China in recent years. Dozens of research centres and hundreds of companies in the country now produce nanotechnologies, thanks largely to considerable investment by the central government.

In this article, Alexandr Nemets reports on Chinese progress in the field over the past five years and says China now rivals the capacity of the United States in terms of basic nanotechnology research and development.

China has been collaborating with leading Western nanotechnology companies, and both military and civilian applications of nanotechnology are under development.
