Family Health International Research Ethics Training Curriculum

Family Health International — a non-profit organisation based in the United States — works to improve reproductive and family health around the world. They have put together a substantial research ethics training curriculum, which contains a discussion of basic prinicples and case studies. Once the curriculum has been completed (an estimated 4 hours) researchers have the opportunity to take at test and receive a certificate of completion. The online version of the curriculum is available in  English, French, and Spanish.

FAO Climate Change

This web portal publishes news and information on the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) activities in climate change. It links to key FAO publications on agriculture, livestock, forestry and fisheries as well as cross-sector topics such as bioenergy, biodiversity and climate risk management. The gateway gives information on FAO's work in these areas and provides links to relevant factsheets, events and multimedia including videos and audio lectures.

FAO Glossary of Biotechnology for Food and Agriculture

This glossary — available in Arabic, English, French and Spanish — explains technical terms relating to biotechnology and genetic engineering. Definitions were developed, in part, by a panel of Food and Agriculture Organization consultants.

Flu in China; flu information centre

A bilingual Chinese news aggregator for information on bird flu. It provides useful links to new scientific research, public health advice, and a discussion forum. The site is maintained by a company called the Hangzhou Neuro-Hemin Biotech Company, and is funded by registration fees. Paying subscribers can access more information.

Gender and AIDS

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and UNAIDS have created this new and evolving online resource centre about gender and HIV/AIDS, which includes care and treatment issues. The site features news, events, and an electronic discussion forum.

GeneEd Biotechnology Glossary

This glossary, written by two biotechnology experts, is aimed at scientists, journalists and biotechnicians alike. Published by GeneEd, an education provider to life scientists, it is primarily made up of scientific terms.

Genome Biology

The journal Genome Biology is published by BioMedCentral, and offers free access to primary research articles and a preprint depository to which authors may submit work for free distribution over the web. It aims to provide an international forum for the dissemination, discussion and critical review of information about all areas of biology informed by genomic research. As well as publishing primary research, the journal features regular systematic reviews, critical assessments, reports, research news and commentary.

Genome News Network

The Genome News Network is published by The Center for the Advancement of Genomics, and aims to be a lively, trusted online magazine that covers important developments in genomics research around the world. It is updated on a fortnightly basis with news and feature stories about human medicine, agriculture, microbes, and biotechnology, among other current topics. The website also features a guide to sequenced genomes and an interactive timeline of key events in genetic research.

Global Biodiversity Information Facility

The GBIF is an intergovernmental organisation committed to making information on the world’s biodiversity freely available on the Internet. It hosts an online data portal providing free access to scientific records on plants, animals and microbes, including 12 million records on biological specimens. The data are provided by natural history museums, botanic gardens and herbaria as well as conservation organisations.

Global Health Action

Global Health Action is a free, online, peer-reviewed journal devoted to public health challenges. The journal, launched in 2008, aims to fill gaps in health information between rich and poor countries. Papers should address the global health agenda and include a strong policy or implementation component. The journal welcomes manuscripts from the developing world and may waive the publication fee for authors who are unable to pay. It also offers a manuscript mentorship scheme to less experienced researchers.

Global Health Reporting

This is a project operated by the Kaiser Family Foundation with major support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

It aims to keep journalists informed of the latest updates on malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. The website has information on the current status of each disease, and links to news items from around the world. There are also extensive links to libraries and many other information resources.

Readers can receive e-mails of news and event updates from the Kaiser foundation, and can use a search facility for news summaries.

Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology

CropBiotech.Net is the home of the Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology, an information service that provides regular updates about the global status of crop biotechnology, communication materials, and links to other information sources. The Center, which is located in the Philippines, is an initiative of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA). It produces an excellent weekly newsletter - CropBiotech Update - summarising the latest developments in crop biotechnology around the world.

GRAIN bird flu page

GRAIN is a nongovernmental organisation that promotes sustainable management of agricultural biodiversity. The bird flu page of its website provides free access to a number of publications and websites on bird flu and its impact on small-scale farmers in the developing world. The list of publications includes a commentary on the problems created by a top-down approach to controlling bird flu, as well as GRAIN's report on the role of the poultry industry in spreading the disease — available in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

Greenhouse Gas Online

Greenhouse Gas Online aims to provide an up-to-date resource that distills freely available information on cutting edge greenhouse gas science and news. The site features links to numerous news articles and scientific abstracts (from over 100 peer reviewed journals).

Guardian Environment

The Guardian Environment website publishes news and commentary on environmental issues such as climate change, energy, ethical living, food and recycling.

It also provides blogs, job listings and multimedia, including audio and video podcasts. Users can comment and are encouraged to join discussions.

The website also aggregates relevant news from members of the Guardian Environment Network, which brings together the world's best environment websites including SciDev.Net, China Dialogue, Real Science and the World Resources Institute.

H1N1 Flu Resource Centre

This clearing house from The Lancet aggregates scientific articles, news reports and commentary from over 60 journals and societies on the scientific, clinical and public health aspects of A(H1N1) influenza, commonly known as 'swine flu'.

The site contains research articles on the diagnosis, epidemiology, pathogenesis, surveillance, virology, prevention and treatment of A(H1N1) among others. A podcast from John McConnell, editor of The Lancet Infectious Diseases, discusses issues surrounding swine flu. The site also links to relevant organisations and online sources of information about the virus.

H1N1 Influenza Center

This collection of material, from The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), includes news, original research, commentary and analysis on the A(H1N1) influenza virus, or 'swine flu', and related topics such as avian influenza, the 1976 swine flu epidemic and the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

The NEJM resource also publishes advice to practitioners and surveillance updates, including an interactive map of worldwide cases of A(H1N1) influenza. It also links to relevant public health organisations, professional societies and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Twitter feed.

H5N1: News and Resources about Avian Flu

This blog provides comprehensive coverage of bird flu news and developments. It is frequently updated and contains a number of links to other relevant H5N1 resources, including journal articles, government sites and audio-video files. Links to French language websites are also provided.
