FoodFirst: The Institute for Food and Development Policy

FoodFirst opposes the use of genetic engineering in agriculture and food. It publishes briefings, position papers and opinion articles on genetically modified crop technology in relation to sustainable agriculture, hunger and poverty. Its website includes audio and video interviews with FoodFirst staff as well as photo galleries illustrating, among other topics, agriculture in developing countries.

Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions

The Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions is a charity that was founded in 1993 to promote India’s self reliance in primary health care and to help India’s traditional knowledge make a contribution to the world of medicine. It describes itself as an 'unconventional' educational institution that includes research into the conservation scientific analysis of medicinal plants.

Friends of the Earth International

FOEI disputes that genetically modified crops are safe and argues that genetic engineering is unsustainable. It claims to be the 'largest grassroots environmental network' in the world, with 1.5 million members. Its website on genetically modified organisms contains campaign materials and meeting reports on biosafety, hunger and food aid, contamination and corporate control. Group activity notices and a set of frequently asked questions are also provided.

GE Food Alert

GE Food Alert is an information resource for people opposed to the use of genetically engineered crops in food without labelling or independent testing. The website, maintained by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy in Minneapolis, includes news, information and resources on genetically modified crops, food safety and security and intellectual property rights.

Gene Campaign

Gene Campaign is a nongovernmental organisation based in Delhi. Established in 1993 by Dr. Suman Sahai, it organises public debates on genetically modified crops and their relevance to Indian small farmers. It also publishes articles and booklets on genetically modified technology, biopiracy, indigenous knowledge and intellectual property rights.

Genetic Engineering Network

The Genetic Engineering Network is a UK-based network of people opposed to the imposition of GM technology. GEN aims to support, link and publicise all those campaigning against genetic engineering, including local campaign and action groups NGOs, direct activists, and individuals.

Genetic Resources Action International

GRAIN is an international non-governmental organisation which promotes the sustainable management and use of agricultural biodiversity based on people's control over genetic resources and local knowledge. It is dedicated to combatting 'genetic erosion', seeks to prevent the destruction of diversity by industrial agriculture, and supports agricultural biodiversity-based programmes. GRAIN publishes quarterly magazines in English (Seedling) and Spanish (Biodiversidad).

GeneWatch UK

GeneWatch UK is an independent organisation concerned with the ethics and risks of genetic engineering. The organisation has a generally negative view of GM crops and questions how, why and whether the use of genetic technologies should proceed.

Global Commons Institute

GCI is a UK-based organisation that was founded in 1990 after the Second World Climate Conference. It is an independent group whose aim is to advance the protection of those aspects of the geo-biosphere that, in combination, form the global climate system.

Global Forum for Health Research

The Global Forum for Health Research provides evidence, tools and discussion forums for decision-makers in research funding and policy to improve the health of the poor. Although it covers issues for both infectious and non-communicable diseases, the agency recognises that mental health problems are severely neglected in developing countries. As well as links to various publications and reports, the website also hosts RealHealthNews, which aims to share news on research and interventions that can improve the health of those in developing countries.

Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF)

The GHF's mission is to document the impact of climate change on humans, much of which is health-related. The website expands on the forum's key goal to raise awareness of "climate injustice", by which it means that the world's poor who cause "less than 1 per cent of global emissions, suffer 99 per cent of the casualties". The GHF achieves this goal through advocacy, especially at major climate change conferences. The organisation also works with public and private partners on key projects, including Weather Info For All, which seeks to provide reliable weather information to vulnerable communities affected by climate change.

Greenpeace: Genetic Engineering Campaign

Greenpeace is one of the world's leading campaigning organisations for the environment. It strongly opposes genetic engineering and advocates a precautionary approach. The website includes regular updates on anti-GM campaigns worldwide.

Health and Climate Partnership

This partnership of government and non-government organisations, researchers, international bodies and the private sector has a much-called for goal: to increase cooperation between organisations involved different sectors such as health, climate, humanitarian assistance, ecosystems, research and operational services.

The partners collaborate on regional projects to increase capacity within the medical and environmental science communities; use rural communication networks to provide information to remote communities; and enhance the capacity of public-health services to predict and respond quickly to cholera, malaria, meningitis and other climate-sensitive diseases.

Health Global Access Project Coalition

Health GAP is a group of US-based AIDS and human rights activists, people living with HIV/AIDS, public health experts, fair trade advocates and other individuals who campaign against policies that deny HIV treatment to millions. Together with groups in the South, they campaign for improved access to drugs.

Indian Science Communication Society

ISCOS is a non-governmental organisation that brings together science communicators and scientists who are keen to popularise science. The website describes the government of India's one-year training course on science journalism. 

International Foundation for Science

IFS is an international non-governmental organisation that provides support, mostly in the form of small research grants, to young scientists in developing countries. Funds come from governments and various organisations, both national and international. To be eligible, projects must explore the management, use and conservation of the environment and of biological resources, and be carried out in a developing country. International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research

The INCTR is dedicated to helping build capacity for cancer treatment and research in countries in which such capacity is limited. The network, which has support from the US National Cancer Institute, aims to build capacity for cancer treatment and research in countries with limited resources through long-term collaborative projects coupled to training and educational programmes. It also seeks to promote international collaboration on cancer control between developed and developing countries. The INCTR is located at the Institut Pasteur in Brussels but also has branches in the US, France, Brazil, Egypt and Nepal and offices in the UK, India and Tanzania. The website contains details of the network's activities in various countries.

Jamaican Science Research Council

The SRC is Jamaica's primary agency for fostering Jamaican research and promoting its applications. It runs seven research units, from microbiology to wastewater management,  and offers services ranging from training to tissue culture and laboratory analyses. The SRC website hosts four databases: the skills bank, plant gene bank, plant information, and library collection.

Keep Antibiotics Working

This organisation is a coalition of health, environmental, consumer, sustainable agriculture and other advocacy groups, working to end antibiotic misuse. The website has several background articles on antibiotic resistance, as well as a series of factsheets on how resistance can be particularly dangerous to vulnerable populations, such as those affected by HIV/AIDS or diabetes.

It has a useful archive of documents and reports on a variety of issues such as gene transfer, food contamination and animal husbandry.

Leadership for Environment and Development

LEAD is an international network of professionals engaged in sustainable development, all of whom have been through the organisation's leadership training programme. It also welcomes institutional members. LEAD carries out activities in policy, research, action-on-the-ground, communications, and training. It was established in 1991 by the Rockefeller Foundation and has a secretariat in London, United Kingdom.
