OECD Biotechnology

This website, run by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), provides access to statistics, publications and documents and country-specific information on biotechnology in agriculture, fisheries and forestry as well as the role of intellectual property rights in innovation in biotechnology. It also provides news on biosafety issues and databases of biotech products and field trials.

OECD Global Science Forum

The Global Science Forum brings together senior policy advisors from member countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development  (OECD). It provides an international platform for government science policy officials to raise high priority science policy concerns for deliberation, so that the forum might issue advice in those areas.

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

The OECD is an international organisation encompassing 30 countries and addressing economic, social, environmental and governance issues. The Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry carries out policy research and analysis on science, technology and innovation policy issues which provide an analytical basis for policy formulation and advice on the scientific, technological and industrial environment and its relation to growth and employment.

Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development: Migration

The OECD groups 30 member countries that share a commitment to democratic government and the market economy. Best known for its publications and its statistics, its work covers economic and social issues from macroeconomics, to trade, education, development and science and innovation. Its migration section is based on continued monitoring of migration movements and policies in member countries and outside the OECD area, and in-depth analysis of the economic and social aspects of migration.

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development: Agri-Environmental Indicators

This is a single page of links to agriculture and environment-related information, hosted by the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. When it comes to land degradation, the organisation is mostly concerned with developing numerical indicators in areas such as biological diversity, soil erosion, and farm management.

Packard Foundation

The Packard Foundation provides grants to non-profit organisations in the areas of: conservation and science; population; and children, families, and communities. In recent years the foundation has awarded some US$200 million annually in grants. PAHO: Influenza A(H1N1)

This information resource, published by the international public health agency Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), provides daily situation updates on the A(H1N1) influenza virus, or 'swine flu', including the number of confirmed cases reported in individual countries in the Americas and PAHO activities and recommendations.

The site publishes documents in English and Spanish that include background information on the virus as well as guidelines on laboratory procedures, surveillance, clinical management and infection control. It also links to videos of PAHO press conferences on influenza A(H1N1) and other online swine flu resources.

Roll Back Malaria Partnership

The World Health Organization's (WHO) Roll Back Malaria partnership is responsible for formulating malaria policy and strategy, as well as supporting operations and capacity development and co-ordinating the WHO's global efforts against malaria. This includes providing guidelines, monitoring and evaluation for malaria prevention, treatment and control.

Sahara and Sahel Observatory

The SSO is a United Nations clearing-house initiative that encourages developing countries to share information on desertification. The organisation works within the framework of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Projects include developing indicators for environmental monitoring and promoting regional networks of scientists.

Science and Technology for Development

StDev is an initiative of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). It functions as a gateway to the United Nations system-wide information on science and technology for development.

South–South Initiative for Tropical Diseases Research (SSI)

SSI was set up in 2001 to facilitate sharing of resources among research groups in Africa, Asia and Latin America in order to increase competitiveness and optimise scientific opportunities. It provides assistance for proposal development through annual workshops and helps organise annual training courses on leading-edge technology for tropical disease research application in disease endemic countries.

Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases

An independent global programme of scientific collaboration co-sponsored by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO). Its goal is to help coordinate, support and influence global efforts to combat a portfolio of major diseases of the poor and disadvantaged, including malaria.

It funds research teams in developing countries to improve on and develop approaches to disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and control. It also supports capacity-building and implementation of new methods. These activities are focused in Africa, South-East Asia and South America. The website provides useful information in clear, accessible language on research activities, as well as background information on disease and transmission. It contains animated graphics of parasites' lifecycle, and a searchable archive of over 13,000 images related to tropical diseases freely available for non-commercial purposes. Download pdf 

Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review

The Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review (SIDCER) is a network of independently established regional fora for ethical review committees, health researchers and invited partner organisations. As well as providing information about the fora, this site contains links to relevant organisations, as well as to guidance from the World Health Organisation and others about research ethics and ethical review.

The Biosafety Clearing House

The BCH is designed to help parties to the Biosafety Protocol share information on living modified organisms. The website provides information on national regulations, risk assessments, regulatory decisions and clearances, a list of designated technical experts, information about existing genetically modified organisms and details on capacity building initiatives and projects.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission

The Codex Alimentarius Commission is an international body, established by the World Health Organisation and the Food and Agriculture Organisation, responsible for developing standards, guidelines and codes of practice to protect consumer health and maintain fair trade. It has convened an intergovernmental task force on food derived from biotechnology to specifically address issues related to genetically modified foods.

The Codex publishes information on maximum accepted residue limits for pesticides and veterinary drugs as well as multilingual publications on food hygiene, labelling and import and export certification systems.

The FAO avian influenza page

The avian flu page of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), concentrating on the threat the disease poses to animal health. It provides links to a small collection of important documents that outline the organisation's guidelines for tackling the spread of avian flu in livestock.

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology

The ICGEB is an international organisation that does research and training in molecular biology and biotechnology for developing countries. As well as providing information on funding opportunities and relevant events, the ICGEB publishes background information on biosafety and links to related databases, official documents, scientific findings and other websites.

The OIE – avian flu in animals

The World Health Organization for Animal Health (OIE) was set up to ensure transparency in the reporting of global animal disease. It is an intergovernmental organisation with 167 member countries that report the animal diseases detected on their territories. The website lists confirmed cases of avian flu and links to the official reports filed by each country.

The WHO avian flu homepage

This page is the starting point for all World Health Organization (WHO) information about avian flu. The WHO focuses on bird flu's relevance to human health; it is coordinating the global response to human cases of H5N1 avian flu and monitoring the corresponding threat of an influenza pandemic. This website has 'situation updates' in the centre of the page, below which are relevant WHO press releases, meetings and speeches. Links down the right hand side of the page provide access to technical guidelines, information for the general public, and region-specific webpages about avian flu.

The World Bank – Education

The World Bank's education gateway summarises the bank's activities in all areas of education, including higher education (HE). It publishes information on the key issues that influence how it supports HE in developing countries, as well as ongoing projects, speeches, events and recent publications.

The bank also hosts EdStats, a database of statistics on education indicators, including enrolment and completion rates, graduates per subject area and public expenditure on education.
