Established in 1977, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is one of 15 centers supported by CGIAR. ICARDA's mission is to improve the welfare of poor people through research and training in dry areas of the developing world, by increasing the production, productivity and nutritional quality of food, while preserving and enhancing the natural resource base. ICARDA's research provides global benefits of poverty alleviation through productivity improvements integrated with sustainable natural-resource management practices. ICARDA meets this challenge through research, training, and dissemination of information in partnership with the national, regional and international agricultural research and development systems.
ICARDA serves the entire developing world for the improvement of lentil, barley and faba bean; all dry-area developing countries for the improvement of on-farm water-use efficiency, rangeland and small-ruminant production; and the Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) region for the improvement of bread and durum wheats, chickpea, pasture and forage legumes, and farming systems.
ICGEB is dedicated to advanced research and training in molecular biology and biotechnology, with special regard to the needs of the developing world. It strengthens the research capability of its members through training and funding programmes, as well as advisory services. Specific research programmes are located in Trieste, Italy and New Delhi, India, addressing both basic and applied research problems, with particular attention to those pertinent to the developing world.
ICIMOD, based in Kathmandu, serves as a mountain learning and knowledge centre, committed to improving the sustainable livelihoods of mountain peoples in the extended Himalayan region. ICIMOD's strategy is based on working with its partners to identify, test, adapt and provide innovative solutions for overcoming mountain vulnerabilities. The centre builds institutional capacities and facilitates the development of mountain policy and regional cooperation, by serving as a multidisciplinary documentation centre and consultative centre on sustainable development in mountains.
The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics is a research centre based in Trieste, Italy. It offers scientists from developing countries the opportunity to pursue research in physics, methematics, and related fields. Other than its research activities, the centre hosts training courses, workshops, conferences and topical meetings. ICTP operates under the aegis of two United Nations bodies, UNESCO and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
