US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: malaria

The site is aimed at lay readers, including travellers to malaria-affected countries, physicians and health workers. It contains extensive background information on malaria disease, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control. It also covers a brief outline of the history of the discovery of malaria.

US Centers for Diseases Control: Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention

The Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention conducts research and provides information and resources on HIV/AIDS both for the United States and internationally through its Global AIDS Program. The website includes news, email alerts, background information and links to clinical trials databases.

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): Climate change – Health and environmental effects

The EPA regulates the US government's environmental activities and enforces related legislation. As this website shows, it also undertakes research on the links between human health and the environment. Here the agency summarises some of the key research on climate change and health, including vector-borne disease. Although much of the agency's research does focus on the United States, its studies on how global warming will impact air quality and pollution, for example, are likely to be useful around the world.

US Global Change Research Information Office

GCRIO provides access to data and information on global change research, adaptation/mitigation strategies and technologies, and global change-related educational resources on behalf of the various US Federal Agencies and Organisations that are involved in the US Global Change Research Program.

US Office of Research Integrity

The US Office of Research Integrity (ORI) promotes integrity in biomedical and behavioural research supported by the Public Health Service (PHS) at about 4,000 institutions worldwide. This site provides information about its acitivies, as well as links to information and resources, including an international list of websites set up to promote to responsible conduct of research.

US Patent and Trademark Office

The USPTO website contains very detailed and up-to-date information on the US patent and trademark systems. It also contains a patent database allowing for searches for all patents issued since 1790. Full texts of all patents issued since 1976 can also be downloaded.

USAID: Education and universities

This website publishes information on the Higher Education for Development (HED) Program, run by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which supports partnerships between US and developing country universities.

It includes information on individual country initiatives and upcoming events of interest. It also provides links to related publications and reports on higher education, including a guide for institutions wanting to work with USAID.
