AgBiotechNet — published by CABI, a leading international, not-for-profit publisher in applied life sciences — has news, reviews, abstracts of scientific literature, and links about agricultural biotechnology and biosafety for researchers and policy-makers worldwide. While much is available free of charge, paying subscribers access more information (a free 30-day trial is available).
AgBioWorld brings information about technological advances in agriculture to the developing world. Members include scientists, physicians, professors and others who believe that recent developments in plant science — such as biotechnology — can and should be used to increase crop yields, grow more nutritious plants and reduce dependence on chemicals in order to alleviate hunger and help preserve the environment. AgBioWorld is used by many scientists, but is also relevant to teachers, journalists and the general public. The site is kept fairly up-to-date — comments and reports are usually added in response to significant events, and there is also a
discussion group.
The network is in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the African Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum (ABSF), and aims to supply information on biotechnology. By connecting researchers, breeders, farmers, entrepreneurs, journalists, policy makers and donors, ABNETA supports those wanting to develop, discuss or use biotechnology.
ABSP II is a consortium of universities, agricultural research centres, nongovernmental organisations and companies. It is funded by the US Agency for International Development and coordinated by Cornell University. It helps developing countries create and commercialise agricultural biotechnologies, through regionally tailored 'product commercialisation packages' that outline technology development activities, policies and outreach programmes for different bio-engineered crops.
ABSP II has projects in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Mali, Philippines and Uganda.
This site provides access to reports of projects and case studies conducted as part of the international Assessments of Impacts and Adaptations to Climate Change in Multiple Regions and Sectors (AIACC) initiative. A searchable database of projects by country, region, and sector contains some of the final reports in pdf format.
The projects cover adaptation in almost all sectors, with five projects with final reports in southern Africa, one project in eastern Africa and three projects in western Africa. The site also provides accessible summaries of each project, as well as updates posted throughout the duration of the studies.

AEGiS is a virtual HIV/AIDS library containing reference materials and late-breaking information from HIV/AIDS-specific publications and news sources from around the world. The site disseminates and archives information daily, offers e-communication lines, such as an Ask the Doc forum and documents pandemics via global historical database.
AVAC is a community and consumer-based organisation dedicated to accelerating the development and availability of an HIV vaccine through independent analysis, policy advocacy, education and mobilisation. The website contains extensive and regularly updated news and progress reports on vaccine development, including the new
AIDS Vaccine Clearing House containing FAQs, documents, and links to all the major sponsors of HIV vaccine trials, with additional specific information and links available in Thai, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
AIDSchannel is a multimedia web portal - hosted by
OneWorld.net - for the exchange and sharing of news and information about HIV/AIDS. In particular it aims to promote sustainable development, social justice and human rights around the world. Resources include news, analysis, guest editorials, a weekly email digest and radio exchange. The site links to a searchable database of 1,500 member organisations, including NGOs, governments, research institutions and media.
This HIV/AIDS web portal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (publisher of Science) ceased operating in December 2003, but remains an important archive of documents relating to AIDS prevention, treatment and vaccine development. The
International AIDS Vaccine Initiative has taken over the role of reviewing and highlighting recently published scientific literature.
A well-organised service from the US Department of Health and Human Services, AIDSinfo provides news and up-to-date information on all aspects of HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. This educational resource is conveniently divided into sections aimed at different levels of technical expertise: patients and the general public, health care professionals, and researchers. The site includes information on all federally approved treatments, HIV/AIDS research, links and an extensive glossary of scientific and medical HIV/AIDS terms (in both English and Spanish). The site also contains a database of international
clinical trials for HIV vaccines and treatments, including in Africa and Asia.
AIDSmap is an online information service on HIV/AIDS which provides well-written up-to-date news, information and international conference coverage, in partnership with the
International HIV/AIDS Alliance. Although much of the content is written for audiences in the United Kingdom and Europe, there are also features that will be particularly useful in developing countries, such as
Treating HIV/AIDS: a training toolkit, which supports the expansion of treatment in resource-poor settings. The site also carries online databases containing lists of AIDS organisations in more than 150 countries, as well as treatment information.
Aidspan is a relatively new independent non-profit organisation based in New York that provides critical analysis, news and comment on the activities of the Global Fund. It publishes a regular newsletter, the
Global Fund Observer, and guidance to developing countries on how to apply for Global Fund support for HIV/AIDS projects.
AIDSthai is an information portal in both English and Thai, covering AIDS research, prevention and care activities in Thailand, supported by the Thai government's Ministry of Public Health. The website includes background information and links on vaccine research, including the Vaccine Trial Centre at Mahidol University in Bangkok.
A project of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, AlertNet is a news aggregator that aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the globe, particularly 'forgotten' emergencies that rarely make headlines. It publishes news from over 400 aid agencies and other media outlets across a range of topics, from natural disasters to climate change to health. AlertNet also provides tools for journalists, including facts and figures, crisis briefings and training modules.
Aliens is the newsletter of the Invasive Species Group of the World Conservation Union. An associated email listserver is dedicated to alien invasive species, with a focus on those that threaten biodiversity.
AGRA — a joint initiative of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — aims to improve African agriculture through new technologies such as improved seeds and fertilisers, better cultivation practices and greater access to credit and marketing channels to help farmers sell their produce.
AGRA's initial investment — US$150m — will be used to develop stronger varieties of African crops, train African scientists and build distribution channels for agricultural inputs such as seeds and fertilisers.

The Alliance is an initiative of the Global Forum for Health Research in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and has 310 members in over 70 developing countries. Concerned with the effectiveness of health policy and systems research, the Alliance recognises that health systems currently vary greatly in their performance. It considers that there is an urgent need to improve understanding about how societies organise themselves to achieve health goals, including how they plan, manage and finance activities to improve health, the roles played by different actors in these efforts, and the need to provide scientifically sound, socially relevant and ethically acceptable guidance. The Alliance for Microbicide Development brings together pharmaceutical companies, non-profit research institutions and advocacy groups dedicated to the development of topical microbicides. A major highlight of its website is the new

An 'Internet press centre' for news about European science, technology and medicine, AlphaGailileo carries press releases from a range of European research institutes. The site is intended primarily for journalists - who can access embargoed information before it is released publicly, as well as a directory of science experts.
The Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) plays an important role in reducing deforestation in the Amazon Region. FAS manages the Juma reserve, established by the Government of Amazonas in 2006, and runs the Bolsa Floresta programme that pays families and communities to contribute to sustainable forest management. The FAS website provides an introduction to the organisation, an overview of their programmes and links to relevant related documents.
