African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD)

This site provides access to a suite of climate related observations, projections and predictions for the African continent. Of particular interest are the up-to-date seasonal predictions and the African monsoon bulletin. There is also a searchable archive of climate data and research activities detailed in French. ACMAD also offers 'on the job training' in climatology. The website is also available in French.

African Conservation Telegraph

African Conservation Telegraph is a thrice-yearly newsletter published free of charge by the Africa section of the US Society for Conservation Biology. The newsletter aims to provide news and information on conservation science in Africa.

African Drought Risk and Development Network

This UN Development Programme initiative helps drought-prone countries prepare for extreme weather events and reduce anticipated negative impacts. The website includes succinct overviews of drought-risk in individual African countries, as well as a comprehensive links section pointing to relevant networks, research centres, regional organisations and other sources of information, often in developing countries.

African Journal of Biotechnology

The African Journal of Biotechnology is a peer-reviewed online journal that publishes research in food, agricultural and industrial applications of biochemistry, microbiology, genomics and proteomics.

All articles are free to access and readers can also sign up to free email alerts containing the table of contents for each new issue.

African Journal of Food Agriculture, Nutrition and Development

AJFAND is an academic journal — published quarterly — by the Rural Outreach Programme, a non-profit company based in Kenya. The journal's free-access website features peer-reviewed articles about poverty, food security, disease and agriculture in Africa. It also provides commentaries, short communications, book reviews, and relevant news and events. Students can submit work to the student section.

African Journals OnLine

AJOL is an online database of more than 50 African science journals. Run by INASP, it provides access to tables of contents and, when available, abstracts and links to full text articles. It also offers a photocopy document delivery service for all of its listed titles. Users must register (free).

African Malaria Network Trust

AMANET promotes capacity building in African research and training institutes that specialise in malaria studies. Its objectives include promoting collaboration among stakeholders, creating international awareness about the malaria problem in Africa, identifying test sites, developing infrastructure and support for field and clinical trials, and increasing good management practices in malaria research. AMANET produces a biannual online newsletter to disseminate research findings and grant and workshop calls. It also hosts a discussion forum for registered members.

African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology

AMCOST provides a forum for formulating and implementing policies for science, technology and innovation issues that have an impact on African development. It was established by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Union in November 2003, and has since developed and adopted Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action.

AMCOST's website outlines ongoing projects in biodiversity, energy, water, material sciences, mathematics and space science technologies, among others. It also offers information on the activities and rationale behind both the African Panel on Biotechnology and the African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators Initiative.

African Molecular Marker Applications Network

AMMANET promotes using genetic marker-assisted selection (MAS) technologies to accelerate African plant breeding efforts and deliver food security and economic growth. Over 100 African scientists established the network in 2003, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation.

The network brings regional and international agricultural researchers together, publishing information about its activities and providing contact information of all its members. It also links to news, scientific articles and other useful resources on MAS.

African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (AMMA)

The AMMA programme aims to study how the West African monsoon affects meningitis and malaria epidemics. While it focuses on one weather system, the climate factors it looks at can be generalised to other environments. For example, it examines how wind, dust, rainfall, temperature and humidity, amongst others, affect mosquito density and malaria or meningitis epidemics in people. The website also offers a key resource for researchers in the form of an open-access bibliographic database containing more than 250 scientific articles.

African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions

ANSTI is a network of African organisations involved in higher education and research in science and technology. It supports graduate training, staff exchanges and inter-university cooperation. It also provides conference grants, disseminates information on science and technology activities in 33 countries and helps member institutions prepare learning materials. ANSTI also publishes the African Journal of Science and Technology.

African Networks for Health Research & Development

AFRO-NETS is a network of more than 20 health research institutes and networks. It was established in 1997 to facilitate the exchange of information among networks involved in health research for development in Anglophone Africa. It runs an electronic mailing list that acts as a forum for discussion to support collaboration in the fields such as capacity building, planning and conducting research, and transformation of research recommendations. The list also serves as a forum for announcing meetings, training courses and other events of interest to the networks.

African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC)

AORTIC aims to improve cancer research, control and prevention in Africa. The organisation runs research projects on cervical cancer screening, hosts biannual conferences and publishes a monthly newsletter, in English and French, with news and commentary on cancer-related activities around Africa as well as a list of upcoming events. AORTIC's website offers links to other organisations working on cancer in Africa, lists training opportunities for scientists and health workers, and provides free access to relevant training manuals, scientific articles, books and presentations.

African Scientific Network

The African Scientific Network is a US-based organisation that aims to foster a bond between African scientists abroad (it has over 2000 members), and to facilitate collaboration with scientific activities in Africa. Its three main activities are the "African Scientific CD-ROM project", two "Physics in Africa Session", and the establishment of over 20 discipline-based groups and several alumni group.

African Technology Development Forum

The ATDF provides a place for inventors, business bureaus and technology transfer agents to exchange and disseminate information on innovations, technologies, business opportunities and trends in global trade. It aims to stimulate links between research organisations, industry and government. It also helps organise trade fairs and publishes a free online journal for research on science, technology and innovation for African development.

African Technology Policy Studies Network

The ATPS is a multidisciplinary network of researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders interested in generating, promoting and strengthening innovative technology and industrial policies in Africa. It provides small grants for research on science and technology policy in sub-Saharan countries and disseminates results through publications, workshops, conferences and the Internet. The network also organises training for policymakers, legislators, researchers and leaders in the private sector.

AfricanCrops.Net

AfricanCrops.Net — funded by the Rockefeller Foundations Biotechnology, Breeding and Seed Systems Programme and the Partnership to Fight Striga of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation — publishes a monthly newsletter with information on upcoming conferences, training programmes and funding opportunities. It also hosts a discussion forum where visitors can share experiences of issues such as crop improvement and molecular marker applications.

The website links to a wide range of documents and points to resources dedicated to specific African crops such as cassava, cowpea and sorghum. It also hosts an extensive collection of links to online databases, glossaries, bibliographies, search engines, genetic maps and statistics relating to African-focused biotechnology and plant breeding research.

Afro AIDSInfo

AfroAIDSinfo is a web-based project of the South African Medical Research Council, which disseminates information about HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa to the media, researchers, health professionals, the public, educators and policy makers. The site has news and resources including research briefings, policy reports and health information, with a particular emphasis on access to antiretroviral drugs.

Ag Energy Climate

This electronic discussion list focuses on the potential climate change impacts on agriculture and the role of energy in agricultural production, and ways that the agricultural sector can help in efforts to address climate change. Aga Khan University: Bioethics Initiative

Launched in April 2003, this site outlines the Aga Khan University’s activities in medical and research ethics, and includes information about the research ethics committee, hospital ethics committee and bioethics group. Following receipt of a two-year developmental grant from the Fogarty International Centre / US National Institute of Health, the "Pakistan Bioethics Programme: Gateway to the Islamic World" is being developed. Plans are underway to offer a Masters in Bioethics, as well as certificate courses in research ethics, clinical ethics, bioethics education, and health equity, policy and ethics.
