AlertNet: Alerting humanitarians to emergencies

A project of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, AlertNet is a news aggregator that aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the globe, particularly 'forgotten' emergencies that rarely make headlines. It publishes news from over 400 aid agencies and other media outlets across a range of topics, from natural disasters to climate change to health. AlertNet also provides tools for journalists, including facts and figures, crisis briefings and training modules.

Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND)

This not-for-profit organisation works with the private and public sectors to develop and implement quality yet affordable diagnostic technologies for diseases prevalent in developing countries, including tuberculosis, malaria and sleeping sickness. It also aims to strengthen laboratories and scale up projects to improve new tool uptake in endemic regions. The website provides information about the organisation's programmes and partners, news and a resource centre with free access to documents such as reports and scientific articles.

Global Forum for Health Research

The Global Forum for Health Research provides evidence, tools and discussion forums for decision-makers in research funding and policy to improve the health of the poor. Although it covers issues for both infectious and non-communicable diseases, the agency recognises that mental health problems are severely neglected in developing countries. As well as links to various publications and reports, the website also hosts RealHealthNews, which aims to share news on research and interventions that can improve the health of those in developing countries.

Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

The Global Fund was created in 2001 to increase resources to fight three of the world's most devastating diseases, and to direct those resources to areas of greatest need. It operates as a partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities that finances - rather than implements - prevention and treatment programmes.

Global Health Frontline News

This website publishes video news coverage of under-reported global health stories, focusing on HIV/AIDS; polio; tuberculosis; malaria; neglected tropical diseases; maternal and child health; and food security. Each topic includes an overview of the subject, a photo gallery, and the latest news and videos highlighting current issues. The website includes a blog, a 'newsroom' page that highlights developments within the organisation, details of current and future film projects, and links to related organisations.

Global Health Reporting

This is a project operated by the Kaiser Family Foundation with major support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

It aims to keep journalists informed of the latest updates on malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. The website has information on the current status of each disease, and links to news items from around the world. There are also extensive links to libraries and many other information resources.

Readers can receive e-mails of news and event updates from the Kaiser foundation, and can use a search facility for news summaries.

United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

This nongovernmental organisation sets standards of quality, purity and strength for medicines made or sold in the USA. It collaborates with USAID to help countries in the developing world ensure that medicines meet standards for quality and safety, and are used appropriately. The website publishes useful information such as links to courses for chemists and healthcare professionals, a list of drugs pending approval and an overview of Food Chemicals Codex standards. The USP runs a US$35 million project across Africa, Asia and Latin America that focuses on drugs for USAID priority diseases including HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: malaria

The site is aimed at lay readers, including travellers to malaria-affected countries, physicians and health workers. It contains extensive background information on malaria disease, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control. It also covers a brief outline of the history of the discovery of malaria.
