FOUR50 is building a network of experts, activists and enthusiasts committed to preventing the epidemic of chronic disease and raising awareness about its devastating consequences. It aims to do this by focusing on the 3 risk factors (poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use) that lead to four chronic diseases (CVD, diabetes, chronic lung diseases and some cancers) contributing to more than 50% of deaths worldwide.

The Africa Portal, part of the larger Africa Initiative project, is an online resource for policy-related issues in Africa, covering climate change, food security, energy and health, among other areas. It is published by the Centre for International Governance Innovation; Makerere University, Uganda; and the South African Institute of International Affairs. The website offers an open access publications library with more than 3,000 books, journals, and digital documents available online or to download. It also publishes opinion and analysis on current issues, a directory of experts on African policy, and announcements including events and grants.

AJFAND is an academic journal — published quarterly — by the Rural Outreach Programme, a non-profit company based in Kenya. The journal's free-access website features peer-reviewed articles about poverty, food security, disease and agriculture in Africa. It also provides commentaries, short communications, book reviews, and relevant news and events. Students can submit work to the student section.

AIDSthai is an information portal in both English and Thai, covering AIDS research, prevention and care activities in Thailand, supported by the Thai government's Ministry of Public Health. The website includes background information and links on vaccine research, including the Vaccine Trial Centre at Mahidol University in Bangkok.

A project of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, AlertNet is a news aggregator that aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the globe, particularly 'forgotten' emergencies that rarely make headlines. It publishes news from over 400 aid agencies and other media outlets across a range of topics, from natural disasters to climate change to health. AlertNet also provides tools for journalists, including facts and figures, crisis briefings and training modules.

Initiated by the California Medical Association Foundation, this is a partnership of healthcare providers, public health agencies, consumer and community-based health organisations, government and the pharmaceutical industry. Much of the data on prevalence will probably be relevant only to those in the United States, but much of the information in the factsheets — such as how resistance is spread and how to deal with minor infections — is relevant worldwide.

This is a virtual library of Latin American social science papers maintained by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). It provides open and free access to more than 4,000 full-text books, periodical articles and other documents, in Spanish.

The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre examines how human rights-based approaches can be brought to bear on the operations of international corporations and businesses, particularly with regard to environmental, social, and health-related impacts. As international companies can be the drivers of advances in science and technology, the centre aims to encourage companies to respect human rights by providing relevant information and facilitating constructive discussion.

This is a portal to the websites of associations that aim to advance our understanding of oncology and how to better treat patients with cancer, both in the developed and developing worlds.

Each partner association is represented in the portal with a website describing and providing information relating to the organisation, its structure, news, research projects, activities, membership, resource information, selected links, and so on.

Cancerworld also hosts the Cancer Media Service, operated by the European School of Oncology and aimed at journalists. The independent service aims to put cancer research into context, which it does by publishing well written and easy-to-read summaries of the latest cancer research. Perhaps even more useful is its list of resources for journalists that includes links to several medical dictionaries and cancer organisations worldwide.

The CIDRAP avian flu website publishes news written by in-house journalists as well as links to free stories appearing elsewhere. It hosts lists of guidelines and selected research papers, with links to full articles where available.
