AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition

AVAC is a community and consumer-based organisation dedicated to accelerating the development and availability of an HIV vaccine through independent analysis, policy advocacy, education and mobilisation. The website contains extensive and regularly updated news and progress reports on vaccine development, including the new AIDS Vaccine Clearing House containing FAQs, documents, and links to all the major sponsors of HIV vaccine trials, with additional specific information and links available in Thai, Spanish, Portuguese and French.

Aidspan

Aidspan is a relatively new independent non-profit organisation based in New York that provides critical analysis, news and comment on the activities of the Global Fund. It publishes a regular newsletter, the Global Fund Observer, and guidance to developing countries on how to apply for Global Fund support for HIV/AIDS projects.

American Foundation for AIDS Research

AmFAR is a major non-profit organisation that provides funding for AIDS research, prevention, treatment education and advocacy, including a number of global initiatives. The site also includes background information - such as a useful 'basic facts' factsheet - and an extensive glossary on HIV/AIDS related terms.

AVERTing HIV and AIDS (AVERT)

This international HIV/AIDS charity dedicates a section of its website to traditional medicine, and with good reason — traditional medicines are especially popular with people who have HIV. The website provides advice for those seeking traditional remedies for HIV, lists potential therapies and highlights the role of traditional healers in combating HIV in Africa. It advocates that traditional healers are well placed to encourage HIV prevention, and convince people to get tested for HIV if they are at risk.

Global Forum for Health Research

The Global Forum for Health Research provides evidence, tools and discussion forums for decision-makers in research funding and policy to improve the health of the poor. Although it covers issues for both infectious and non-communicable diseases, the agency recognises that mental health problems are severely neglected in developing countries. As well as links to various publications and reports, the website also hosts RealHealthNews, which aims to share news on research and interventions that can improve the health of those in developing countries.

Health Global Access Project Coalition

Health GAP is a group of US-based AIDS and human rights activists, people living with HIV/AIDS, public health experts, fair trade advocates and other individuals who campaign against policies that deny HIV treatment to millions. Together with groups in the South, they campaign for improved access to drugs.

The Global Campaign for Microbicides

The Global Campaign for Microbicides is an international organisation that aims to build awareness and political support for investment in microbides research and development, access and use. Its key activities are advocacy, policy analysis and social sciences research, in collaboration with partner organisations. One of the website's highlights is a summary of the main facts and issues around microbicides, such as mechanisms of action, rationale for use, safety, availability, potential for contraception, and economics.

United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

This nongovernmental organisation sets standards of quality, purity and strength for medicines made or sold in the USA. It collaborates with USAID to help countries in the developing world ensure that medicines meet standards for quality and safety, and are used appropriately. The website publishes useful information such as links to courses for chemists and healthcare professionals, a list of drugs pending approval and an overview of Food Chemicals Codex standards. The USP runs a US$35 million project across Africa, Asia and Latin America that focuses on drugs for USAID priority diseases including HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
