Biocarbon Tracker

BioCarbon Tracker is a free tool that provides data and maps to help organisations prevent greenhouse gas emissions by preserving forests and woodlands. It uses satellite data and advanced methods to identify ecosystems where biocarbon (carbon absorbed by plants) is stored; vegetation at risk from land use change; and land with high biocarbon stock that is converted to agriculture. The website provides an overview of how the maps are constructed, and a library of maps showing carbon stores around the world. It also publishes a blog highlighting relevant news, events and information.

Climate Lite

Part of the Institute of Development Studies at Sussex University, United Kingdom, Climate Lite publishes briefings and short films on climate change and international development.

These cover issues including low-carbon development, climate change research and the Sahel community, China's position on reducing carbon emissions, the legal aspects of encouraging the United States to sign up to a climate agreement, social protection and climate adaptation, and pro-poor climate adaptation.

The information is presented in non-technical language, making it accessible for people with little knowledge of climate change. The website is aimed at policymakers and climate change practitioners.

Climate-L.org: REDD

Climate-L.org, run by the International Institute for Sustainable Development, publishes information on international climate change negotiations and other related activities, including updates on UN processes and notification of research publications. The information is arranged by actors involved, activities undertaken or issues considered (including reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation – REDD). Site highlights include regular policy updates and a diary of upcoming events.

Forest Carbon Asia

This website publishes information about climate change mitigation through forest carbon sequestration and storage across Asia. It provides news and views from the media, a library of publications, directories of forest carbon stakeholders, announcements about vacancies and events, links to useful resources and reviews of science and policy developments in the field. The publications section includes in-house articles and research reports that review developments, identify gaps and draw lessons from forest carbon activities in the region. Readers can comment, engage in discussion and contribute information to the website.

Greenhouse Gas Online

Greenhouse Gas Online aims to provide an up-to-date resource that distills freely available information on cutting edge greenhouse gas science and news. The site features links to numerous news articles and scientific abstracts (from over 100 peer reviewed journals).

Guardian Environment

The Guardian Environment website publishes news and commentary on environmental issues such as climate change, energy, ethical living, food and recycling.

It also provides blogs, job listings and multimedia, including audio and video podcasts. Users can comment and are encouraged to join discussions.

The website also aggregates relevant news from members of the Guardian Environment Network, which brings together the world's best environment websites including SciDev.Net, China Dialogue, Real Science and the World Resources Institute.

On the frontlines of climate change: REDD

This online forum for indigenous peoples, small island nations and vulnerable communities was launched by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with support from other international bodies. It has several goals, including supporting community-based research and educational activities related to climate change. The forum publishes lead articles and invites discussion related to the themes raised. From February to May 2009, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) was discussed.

REDD-net

This website publishes information about Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) activities, providing a platform to share experiences, and supporting pro-poor projects and policies. Led by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) in the United Kingdom, the initiative targets southern civil society organisations, governments, the private sector and REDD+ practitioners.

The website features several themes including poverty reduction, climate change adaptation and carbon rights. It offers access to a resource library that contains related research and publications, a blog, and an online forum organised by theme and region.

The Energy and Resources Institute

This site offers a thorough introduction to climate change in an Indian context. Several links provide information on, for example, India’s greenhouse gas emissions and the country’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change.
