Genomics: challenges and opportunities in India

Despite having the necessary scientific and technological infrastructure, India let the Human Genome Project pass it by. Future advances in the field will revolve around mining large databases for new knowledge and converting them into useful and commercially significant results.

In this article, Kannan Sivaprakasam argues that India could contribute immensely to these information-driven activities, particularly given its scientific manpower in both the life sciences and information technology.

India could really make its mark in the post-genomics era, the author says, if there is an organised and directed public-private partnership.
