Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center

The New York-based Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center conducts basic research and clinical trials on HIV/AIDS, and is affiliated to The Rockefeller University. The website contains a brief fact sheet and a particularly clear graphical illustration of the stages of the HIV life cycle. The Center has recently begun a phase I clinical trial of an HIV vaccine that is particularly representative of the HIV strain most prevalent in China.

African AIDS Vaccine Research Programme

The African AIDS Vaccine Programme was conceived in June 2000 as a network of African experts, working together to promote and facilitate HIV vaccine research and evaluation in Africa. Sponsored by WHO-UNAIDS, its mission is to advocate and support a coordinated effort to contribute to the global HIV vaccine development goals, ensuring that appropriate and affordable vaccines are developed for Africa in the shortest possible time.

Applied Clinical Trials

Applied Clinical Trials is a journal aimed at the global community of pharmaceutical and medical professionals who design, initiate, manage, conduct, and monitor clinical trials in the tightly regulated, highly competitive pharmaceutical industry. Some of the articles are relevant to developing countries, and the site also contains links to other useful resources.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: Nutrition

The Gates Foundation's nutrition programme aims to include essential vitamins and minerals in the diets of people in the developing world, and to guarantee proper nutrition under the age of two, including in the womb.

Progress sheets and a strategy overview on the organisation's nutrition program are available to download as well as press releases and information on grants given. The website also includes job listings, downloadable fact sheets, financial statements and annual reviews.

The foundation funds population-wide food fortification programmes and invests in research and development of diagnostic tools and biomarkers for identifying and measuring micronutrient deficiencies. It also funds research to examine how different nutritional interventions affect infection.

Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS)

The CCRAS is a department within the Indian government dedicated to formulating and coordinating scientific research into indigenous Indian systems of medicine. The organisation funds and undertakes research on treatments for diseases such as hepatitis and filiariasis. The site also has online training modules on drug standardisation and intellectual property rights.

European Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines (EAASM)

This organisation, with members from the public and private sector, aims to promote patient safety and raise awareness about the problem of counterfeit medicines. The website offers advice on detecting counterfeit medicines in the local pharmacy or online — by noticing whether a tablet has an unusual smell or taste, for example. It also provides an overview of counterfeit medicines, features relevant news stories and outlines the technological tools that manufacturers or pharmacists can use to detect fake drugs.

Global Funding of Innovation for Neglected Diseases (G-FINDER) public search tool

This online database from The George Institute for International Health in Australia provides data on global research and development funding for more than thirty neglected diseases. It includes data from public, private and not-for-profit organisations across the developing and developed world.

HIV Vaccine Trials Network

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network is an international collaboration of scientists from more than 20 institutions worldwide developing and testing HIV vaccines in all phases of clinical trials. The website contains an excellent searchable database of ongoing trials, background information and a media archive, and a summary of major issues discussed at the July 2004 International AIDS Conference in Bangkok presentations

Iberoamerican Bioinformatics Network

The Iberoamerican Bioinformatics Network brings together bioinformatics researchers from a number of Latin American nations and Spain. It aims to improve bioinformatics training, support high-quality research in the field of bioinformatics, and ensure that bioinformatics is kept up-to-date through the development of new computational tools.

Initiative for Vaccine Research

A unit within the World Health Organization, IVR aims to develop and promote a global and sustainable research and development pipeline. This would deliver cost-effective vaccines against diseases that are particularly devastating in developing countries. The website provides a useful summary of its vaccine portfolio  and a report of the IVR Global Vaccine Research Forum

Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM)

The Institute of Tropical Medicine provides training and research into tropical medicine and veterinary health care in developing countries. Its activities include studies on disease control and healthcare systems, education, clinical care, and support for governments and institutions involved in human and animal health. The website provides information about the institute's activities, including research in biomedical sciences, public health and clinical sciences. It also provides access to information about diagnostic supplies, and to resources such as blogs, networks and meetings about global health.

International AIDS Vaccine Initiative

IAVI is a global organisation working to speed the development and distribution of preventive AIDS vaccines. IAVI’s work focuses on: mobilising support through advocacy and education; accelerating scientific progress; encouraging industrial participation in AIDS vaccine development; and assuring global access. Its newsletter, IAVI report, is a useful source of up-to-date information and insights, and is accompanied by a lay summary Vax. The website also includes recent policy publications, HIV/AIDS news headlines, an excellent glossary and a vaccines trials database.

International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations

The IFPMA represents the worldwide research-based pharmaceutical industry and other manufacturers of prescription medicines. The membership consists of national industry associations from both developed and developing countries, and corporations. The website contains IFPMA position papers on patent protection for pharmaceuticals and protection of innovation, the TRIPS Agreement, and prevention of counterfeiting.

International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce (IMPACT)

This global coalition of stakeholders — international and nongovernmental organizations, drug manufacturers and regulatory authorities —was set up by the WHO and works globally to tackle the production, trade and sale of counterfeit medical products. The website publishes information about the organisation’s activities and five working groups of experts that focus on specific aspects of the problem. It also provides a list of resources, including recommendations on raising awareness about the issue.  Through IMPACT, the WHO has developed guidelines for measures to combat counterfeit medicines, which are also available on the website.

Malaria Vaccine Initiative

This global non-profit organisation established by PATH (the Programme for Appropriate Technology in Health) develops and tests potential malaria vaccines. The website contains background information on its malaria vaccine programme, including fact sheets, project and strategy outlines, interviews, and extensive links to other vaccine and malaria-related organisations.

Partnership for Safe Medicines

This group of mainly not-for-profit organisations works to protect consumers from counterfeit medicines. The website publishes an encyclopaedia of counterfeit drug incidents documenting details of where, when and how counterfeit drugs or other medical products have been identified in the legitimate drug supply around the world. Press releases, news articles, resources on online pharmacy regulations and contact details of experts in the field are free to access. The site also features relevant research articles and includes a guide advising pharmacists on how to be alert to counterfeit medicines.

Pharmaceuticals Security Institute (PSI)

The PSI is a network of 25 pharmaceutical companies set up to improve information sharing about counterfeit pharmaceuticals. The website provides an overview of definitions, trends and detections of counterfeit drugs, and provides links to useful resources — such as trusted online suppliers of medicine and guides to detecting fake drugs. The institute informs law-enforcement and regulatory agencies when it receives information about organisations or individuals that could be involved in counterfeiting. It focuses on ending drug manufacturers' commercial losses through counterfeiting — generally those bigger than US$100,000 or activities involving large criminal networks.

The Global Campaign for Microbicides

The Global Campaign for Microbicides is an international organisation that aims to build awareness and political support for investment in microbides research and development, access and use. Its key activities are advocacy, policy analysis and social sciences research, in collaboration with partner organisations. One of the website's highlights is a summary of the main facts and issues around microbicides, such as mechanisms of action, rationale for use, safety, availability, potential for contraception, and economics.

The Institute of Human Virology

The Institute of Human Virology, in Maryland, United States, is a multidisciplinary research institute dedicated to finding new treatments and vaccines for HIV, hepatitis C, and other diseases. Its main focus is basic and clinical HIV/AIDS research, including vaccine development. The website is well organised with information and links to collaborators around the world, as well as a list of clinical trials.

United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

This nongovernmental organisation sets standards of quality, purity and strength for medicines made or sold in the USA. It collaborates with USAID to help countries in the developing world ensure that medicines meet standards for quality and safety, and are used appropriately. The website publishes useful information such as links to courses for chemists and healthcare professionals, a list of drugs pending approval and an overview of Food Chemicals Codex standards. The USP runs a US$35 million project across Africa, Asia and Latin America that focuses on drugs for USAID priority diseases including HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
