Researchers rage at US visa clampdown

Visitors to the United States have faced tighter entry controls since the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks. Restrictions tightened further last August, when the Department of State broadened its guidelines covering visiting researchers from 'sensitive countries' to encompass those from all destinations.

In this article, Geoff Brumfiel reports on the effects that these restrictions have had on foreign scientists visiting the United States. Trips to the United States have been delayed for weeks or months, and many scientists have been refused visa altogether.

The clampdown is affecting numerous scientific programmes, for which foreign scientists are a vital source of new ideas and perspectives. Also affected are public-health programmes, particularly those aimed at tackling infectious diseases such as HIV.
