India: champion of new technologies

Over the past 30 years, India has built up technological independence in many areas including telecommunications, solar energy, supercomputers and computer software.

In this article Ashok Parthasarathi of Jawarharlal Nehru University, Delhi, reviews these India's performance in these areas.

The author notes that despite its strengths, India needs to invest far more to retain its lead in research and development. In particular, the country must build up government-industry partnerships that exploit its advantages and respond to pressing national needs.
