AIDS research steams ahead in Pune

The city of Pune in Maharashtra, India, boasts one of the world's only national research institutions dedicated to HIV and AIDS. With a staff of 60 and state-of-the-art laboratories, the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) is the best equipped such research facility in the country.

In this article, Jon Cohen offers a glimpse into NARI's training, outreach and research, many of them international collaborations. Epidemiologist Robert Bollinger of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, has been a key player since the institute was launched in 1992.

NARI's only shortcoming, says Cohen, is that its work has yet to reach far beyond Pune — a state of affairs NARI itself is eager to change.
