The institute is engaged in a project to bring clean water and sanitation to communities in Ghana, Mali and Niger through the West Africa Water Initiative (WAWI). WAWI aims to do this before 2008.

DESIRE

Funded by the European Union, DESIRE is an international collaborative project aimed at establishing alternative strategies for using and protecting arid and semi-arid ecosystems under threat from land degradation and desertification. Field sites for testing new conservation techniques include areas in Africa, China and Latin America.

The DESIRE website publishes news and information about the project, highlights upcoming events and links to other relevant sites.

DESIRE

This website publishes information about an international project that aims to design integrated conservation strategies to protect arid and semi-arid ecosystems by preventing and reducing degradation. It concentrates on 18 desertification and degradation 'hotspots' around the world, including Cape Verde, Chile, and Morocco. The website publishes information about research sites, reports and partners, including a dedicated information system, and links to a library of related organisations and upcoming events.

Earth Negotiations Bulletin

An authoritative and comprehensive newsletter covering meetings of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification – as well as all other meetings of UN environment and development-related conventions. ENB writers have high-level access to all meetings and to UN officials, which makes ENB a must-read by experts in the field. It is the best way to follow a meeting without attending it in person. The site also contains links to newsletters covering the latest developments in water, climate change, forests and multilateral environmental agreements.

Environment and Energy

Part of the UN Development Programme, the Environment and Energy group work in six areas: water governance, frameworks and strategies for sustainable development, sustainable energy, sustainable land management, biodiversity and chemicals management.

The group publishes information on its projects in each of these areas as well case study analyses, policy papers, toolkits for practitioners, press information and links to external websites.

Global Environment Facility - Land Degradation

Land degradation is one of five priority areas for the GEF, the main UN funding agency for environment and development projects. Between 2002 and 2005, the agency invested some $250 million in projects that incorporated good land management practice into national development plans. This website provides a list of 64 land management projects from all over the world that have received GEF funding. It lists how much each project received and also provides advice and guidance to those who want to apply for GEF funds.

Gobabeb Training and Research Centre

The Gobabeb Training and Research Centre aims to understand the relationship between the ecology of arid environments and human activities. Its areas of focus include developing appropriate technologies that can help improve quality of life, such as fog-collection and alternative energy sources. The centre is attached to the Southern Africa Development Community, the intergovernmental organisation representing countries in southern Africa. It is also associated with the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia.

Guardian Environment

The Guardian Environment website publishes news and commentary on environmental issues such as climate change, energy, ethical living, food and recycling.

It also provides blogs, job listings and multimedia, including audio and video podcasts. Users can comment and are encouraged to join discussions.

The website also aggregates relevant news from members of the Guardian Environment Network, which brings together the world's best environment websites including SciDev.Net, China Dialogue, Real Science and the World Resources Institute.

Haramata – Bulletin of the Drylands

Haramata is published, in French and English, by the International Institute for Environment and Development — as part of its drylands research programme. Each edition contains news, features and commentaries on key challenges faced by people living in the world's drylands. Past issues have covered topics such as pastoral livelihoods, land and water rights, local decision-making, HIV/AIDS and biodiversity. The bulletin also features regular articles on technologies being used effectively for development in dryland areas, such as mobile phones.

Each issue of Haramata is published together with several 'Issue Papers' that present research findings, results from practical experience or theories about dryland development. Contributions for these papers are accepted from authors in all dryland areas.

International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas

Established in 1977, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is one of 15 centers supported by CGIAR. ICARDA's mission is to improve the welfare of poor people through research and training in dry areas of the developing world, by increasing the production, productivity and nutritional quality of food, while preserving and enhancing the natural resource base.  ICARDA's research provides global benefits of poverty alleviation through productivity improvements integrated with sustainable natural-resource management practices. ICARDA meets this challenge through research, training, and dissemination of information in partnership with the national, regional and international agricultural research and development systems.

ICARDA serves the entire developing world for the improvement of lentil, barley and faba bean; all dry-area developing countries for the improvement of on-farm water-use efficiency, rangeland and small-ruminant production; and the Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) region for the improvement of bread and durum wheats, chickpea, pasture and forage legumes, and farming systems.

International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics

ICRISAT is a non-profit, apolitical, international organisation devoted to science-based agricultural development. It is one of the 16 Future Harvest centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Its research focuses on the farming systems of the semi-arid tropical areas of the developing world, where erratic rainfall, low soil fertility, and extreme poverty are formidable constraints to agricultural development.

International Year of Deserts and Desertification (2006)

2006 is the International Year of Deserts and Desertification, as designated by the 58th session of the UN General Assembly. World Environment Day on 5 June 2006 and will focus exclusively on this topic. This is the International Year's official website. It contains a brief introduction to deserts and desertification, but it is mainly a source of information on all upcoming events around the world. These include conferences, exhibitions, and new books.

Rural Poverty Portal

This website from the International Fund for Agricultural Research shares information on strategies to eradicate rural poverty. The site publishes articles, case studies and videos on key topics including desertification, livestock and rural finance. It also links to relevant reports, projects, programmes and organisations.

The SSO is a United Nations clearing-house initiative that encourages developing countries to share information on desertification. The organisation works within the framework of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Projects include developing indicators for environmental monitoring and promoting regional networks of scientists.

The Desert Research Foundation of Namibia

The DRFN provides research-based advice and training aimed at sustainable development policymakers in southern Africa. The organisation's areas of focus include managing rangelands and livestock, water, energy efficiency and combating land degradation and desertification. The DRFN also helps raise public awareness of deserts and desertification.

UN Convention to Combat Desertification

The UN convention's 179 member countries have agreed to make combating desertification a national priority for ten years. A conference of member countries (known as parties) takes place every two years to make decisions. The convention's secretariat is in Bonn. The convention's website contains all documents, meeting dates, press releases and other information related to the UN desertification convention. A science section focuses on technical issues linked to the convention process, and in particular the work of the convention's dedicated Committee on Science and Technology. The site also has a searchable database of experts. The site is aimed at those involved in the convention process – it is not meant for the non-expert user.

UN Development Programme Drylands Development Centre

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, this centre helps countries in dry regions with their poverty alleviation planning, research, analysis and capacity-building efforts. The centre was founded in 1973 in response to recurring droughts in the Sahel. It was known then as the UN Sudano-Sahelian Office and was based in Burkina Faso carrying out relief and development work.
