African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology

AMCOST provides a forum for formulating and implementing policies for science, technology and innovation issues that have an impact on African development. It was established by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Union in November 2003, and has since developed and adopted Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action.

AMCOST's website outlines ongoing projects in biodiversity, energy, water, material sciences, mathematics and space science technologies, among others. It also offers information on the activities and rationale behind both the African Panel on Biotechnology and the African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators Initiative.

AIDSchannel

AIDSchannel is a multimedia web portal - hosted by OneWorld.net - for the exchange and sharing of news and information about HIV/AIDS. In particular it aims to promote sustainable development, social justice and human rights around the world. Resources include news, analysis, guest editorials, a weekly email digest and radio exchange. The site links to a searchable database of 1,500 member organisations, including NGOs, governments, research institutions and media.

Climate Change Knowledge Network

CCKN brings together expertise, experience and perspectives from more than a dozen organisations from developing, transitional and developed countries. Limited resources, knowledge and capacity in developing countries, and lack of dialogue and understanding between industrialised and developing countries, obstruct progress toward international efforts to address climate change. CCKN aims to help address these gaps by facilitating focused research and capacity building in developing and developed countries, with sustainable development as the overall goal. Its 'Climate Compendium' has a comprehensive section on international negotiations.

EdStats (Education Statistics)

EdStats, developed by the World Bank, collects data on education from national reports, UNESCO (UN Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development to provide educational statistics for over 200 countries and regions.

It also includes World Bank public expenditure data from 2002 onwards as well as projections of educational attainment and enrolment rates until 2050.

Data can be custom searched but is also available in pre-defined reports by country or topic, for example on the Millennium Development Goals or private education expenditure.

Ethiopian Agriculture Portal

This free information portal publishes documents and links to useful resources related to the development of Ethiopian agriculture, including open-access journals, events and agricultural land agreements. Many of the documents are available in local languages, including Amharic, and users can download Amharic fonts through the website.

The website provides information on crops categorised by type, such as cereal, coffee and fruits; forest products such as gum and incense; and livestock, including cattle and camels. It offers resources that cover the areas of capacity building, good practice, research and education, as well as partners involved in agricultural development in Ethiopia.

Gateway to Forest Information (GFIS)

The website publishes forest-related information as part of a collaborative effort that also promotes knowledge sharing by developing information exchange standards, building capacity and enhancing partnerships. It aims to make the information accessible to governments, researchers, forest managers, non-governmental organisations, community groups and the public. The website includes links to publications, relevant events, job vacancies as a blog, and other relevant information. It also provides access to a searchable database of organisations working on forest issues worldwide.

Gender and AIDS

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and UNAIDS have created this new and evolving online resource centre about gender and HIV/AIDS, which includes care and treatment issues. The site features news, events, and an electronic discussion forum.

International Development Statistics (IDS)

The IDS, a statistics service from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is an online database of the volume, origin and types of aid and resource flows to over 150 developing countries.

The data are collected from official statistical reports submitted to the OECD by members of its Development Assistance Committee and include figures on official development assistance, other official flows and private funding.

A Creditor Reporting System provides further data on where aid goes, what purposes it serves and what policies it aims to implement.

Knowledge for Development

Knowledge for Development is a web-based source of information on science and technology for agriculture and rural development in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. It promotes collaboration between agricultural research and development scientists and technologists in ACP countries, and facilitates dialogue between ACP and European communities with the aim of strengthening policy formulation on science and technology issues.

This website contains a number of useful documents on biofuels and biotechnology in ACP countries.

Prolinnova

This programme was set up by several nongovernmental organisations to promote sustainable agriculture and natural resource management in developing nations. It aims to facilitate the use of indigenous knowledge to help farmers devise systems to cope with change, achieve food security, sustain livelihoods and protect the environment. It also works towards integrating local innovations into formal agricultural research.

The website offers information on projects arranged by country and project theme, as well as relevant news and events. It also publishes extensive resources including links to publications, training materials and a gallery with audiovisual resources.

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network offers advice, technical assistance, research, knowledge sharing and capacity-building services on "climate-compatible development" — interlinking climate change adaptation and mitigation with poverty reduction and development. Its services are provided free of charge to policymakers in 'priority' countries and to some international organisations.

Free-access publications, presentations, policy briefs and opinion articles are provided through the website, which also publishes information on projects such as how to make climate finance work for Africa, and finding climate-compatible development solutions in Ghana. The network encourages knowledge sharing and partnership building through community workspaces, blogs and social networking tools. The website is available in English and Spanish.
