Asian Institute of Technology

Located in Thailand, AIT provides education in technology, engineering, science, planning and management. Its mission is to promote technology for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region through education, research and outreach. The institute also has a centre in Viet Nam.

Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs/John F. Kennedy School of Government/Harvard University

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs of the John F. Kennedy School of Government undertakes research, teaching, and training in science and technology policy, and other areas.

Part of the centre's mission is to provide policy-relevant knowledge on science and technology policy. The centre’s research activities include the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program, a multidisciplinary research area which draws on political science, economics, management, and law to study problems where science, technology, and policy intersect.

Center for International Science and Technology Policy

The Center for International Science and Technology Policy is part of the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University. The center undertakes research and teaching on issues related to science, technology, and public policy. The center also carries out research projects for a variety of government and non-government sponsors.

Centre for Innovation, Knowledge and Development

The IKD is an interdisciplinary organisation made up of six research groups from the Open University.

The groups work on topics related to knowledge creation and diffusion and sustainable development. These include capacity development, public-private partnerships, enterprise development and entrepreneurship and health, medical and agricultural biotechnology.

The IKD publishes working papers, runs a series of seminars and organises regular workshops and conferences.

CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF)

This programme aims to encourage better management of water for food production by increasing the resilience of social and ecological systems.

It does this by focusing on the interconnections between water, food and poverty in developing countries. The programme helps develop water-related innovations by bringing together scientists, development specialists, policymakers and communities.

The website publishes information on its research programmes and projects as well as blogs and related news, job vacancies and events.

D-Lab

D-Lab, run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is a programme of academic courses aimed at developing and implementing low-cost technologies to address poverty. Its approach is based on building partnerships and promoting capacity building, local innovation and indigenous knowledge.

The website contains information on its sixteen courses, and projects developed through the programme. Instructions on how to implement certain projects — such as making charcoal from agricultural waste — are also included.

 

Gobabeb Training and Research Centre

The Gobabeb Training and Research Centre aims to understand the relationship between the ecology of arid environments and human activities. Its areas of focus include developing appropriate technologies that can help improve quality of life, such as fog-collection and alternative energy sources. The centre is attached to the Southern Africa Development Community, the intergovernmental organisation representing countries in southern Africa. It is also associated with the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia.

Institute of Development Studies

The Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, UK, is one of the world's leading organisations undertaking research and teaching on international development. One of the key themes in IDS research focus on globalisation and the productive sector in developing countries. IDS also offers consultancy and policy advisory services for funding agencies and development organisations.

South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

The CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) is the largest community and industry directed scientific and technological research, development and implementation organisation in Africa and currently undertakes approximately 10 per cent of all research and development work on the continent. As a key provider of information and technology solutions, the CSIR plays an integral part in the development of South Africa as a nation and the Southern African Development Community.

The International Network on Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage

This informal network, part of the University of Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health, brings together over 100 organisations working to promote and scale up adoption of practices and technologies that improve drinking water quality for vulnerable populations.

By providing information and promoting independent research, the network aims to reduce water-related diseases by promoting water treatment and safe water storage at the household level. The website provides an overview of the network, working groups and guiding principles. It lists participating organisations and relevant events, and publishes a monthly newsletter.

UNU - MERIT

United Nations University - Maastricht Economic and social Research and training centre on Innovation and Technology.  UNU-MERIT is a joint research and training centre of United Nations University (UNU) and Maastricht University, The Netherlands.  Their mission is to provide insights into the social, political and economic factors that drive technological change and innovation, with a particular focus on the creation, diffusion and access to knowledge. The Centre's research and policy work, and its extensive PhD training and capacity development programmes explore the complementary roles of states, research institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations in bringing about innovation for equitable and environmentally sustainable economic development.
