Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture

Launched in 2003, AGORA provides free or subsidised journal access to not-for-profit institutions in eligible countries. Once details are finalised, all institutions in countries with a GNP per capita under US$1,000 will be given access to participating literature. The journal collection focuses on agriculture and related sciences, and includes titles from major publishing houses. AGORA is an FAO initiative. Click here for more details about registering.

Action Group on Erosion, Technology and Concentration

An international non-governmental organisation run from Canada (formerly known as RAFI — the Rural Advancement Foundation International). Dedicated to the 'socially responsible development of technologies useful to rural societies', the ETC group has taken the lead on various campaigns on the impact of intellectual property on agriculture and world food security. The website includes ETC 'comment' articles which are generally opposed to GM technology.

BioSafe Train

The BioSafe Train project is an international collaboration of scientists aiming to build capacity for dealing with the challenges associated with implementing genetically modified (GM) crops in East Africa.

It publishes information on students' research projects that cover topics such as the environmental impacts of GM maize in Kenya, biodiversity in cotton fields in Uganda and the ecological risks posed by transgenic rice in Tanzania.

BioSafe Train also publishes a regular newsletter, issues press releases, links to partner institutions and related organisations, and highlights meetings and events.

CABI

CABI is a not-for-profit, intergovernmental organisation specialising in agricultural and environmental research, publishing and communication. With over 40 different member countries, its scientific projects include finding ways to lower production costs while using ecological practices. CABI studies environmental impacts of invasive species and pests, and searches for natural ways of controlling them. CABI also finds solutions to agricultural problems caused by climate change, provides microbial services and advises on trade policy.

Ethiopian Agriculture Portal

This free information portal publishes documents and links to useful resources related to the development of Ethiopian agriculture, including open-access journals, events and agricultural land agreements. Many of the documents are available in local languages, including Amharic, and users can download Amharic fonts through the website.

The website provides information on crops categorised by type, such as cereal, coffee and fruits; forest products such as gum and incense; and livestock, including cattle and camels. It offers resources that cover the areas of capacity building, good practice, research and education, as well as partners involved in agricultural development in Ethiopia.

FAOSTAT

This website, by the Food and Agriculture Organization, provides a comprehensive database of statistics on food, agriculture and hunger in 200 countries.

The data includes information about individual countries' crop and livestock production, trade, food supply, stocks, forestry and fisheries.

Food security information for decision making

This website publishes news and information on the joint European Committee and Food and Agriculture Organization programme 'Linking information and decision making to improve food security'. It includes 30 country-level food security briefs, a food security analysis 'toolkit' and a range of publications including policy briefs and reports.

The site also promotes training and workshops, and hosts e-learning courses, on topics such as crop forecasting, market analysis and vulnerability assessment.

Future Agricultures

This consortium of African and UK institutions aims to encourage dialogue and good practice among policymakers involved in African agriculture. Its website publishes research, working papers, policy briefs, news and online debates on issues such as climate change and pastoralism among others.

International Water Management Institute (IWMI)

The International Water Management Institute — one of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research centres — conducts research aimed at improving water and land management. Its website includes information about all its work, including regional profiles of areas in Africa and Asia. It also publishes details of upcoming events and recent publications.

Information and commentary are available by topic, including climate change, wetlands and gender. The website also links to other relevant tools and resources such as the Drought Information Center and the African Water Law Database.

Mongabay.com

Mongabay.com is an environmental science and conservation news site, founded in 1999 and run by environmental journalist Rhett A. Butler. Its content focuses on tropical forests, including in-depth information and facts and figures on deforestation and forest degradation. Progress on proposals for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is regularly reported and analysed.

Mongabay.com is published in several languages, including English, Chinese and Spanish. A 'kids version' is also available to help educate children about rainforests.

Nourishing the planet

This blog from the Worldwatch Institute publishes news, commentary and videos about agricultural innovations such as cropping methods or irrigation technologies. The blog contributors highlight projects and activities from across the developing world, with the aim of demonstrating the benefits of flexible food systems for sustainability, diversity, ecosystem health and hunger eradication.

Rainwater Harvesting

This website provides a comprehensive guide to rainwater harvesting in India. It outlines various modern and traditional techniques available for collecting rainwater, highlights case studies and publishes maps and background information on key water topics, including scarcity, pollution, conflicts, and policy.

Rural Poverty Portal

This website from the International Fund for Agricultural Research shares information on strategies to eradicate rural poverty. The site publishes articles, case studies and videos on key topics including desertification, livestock and rural finance. It also links to relevant reports, projects, programmes and organisations.

World Agroforestry Centre

The World Agroforestry Centre, formerly the International Council for Research in Agroforestry, promotes agroforestry research in developing countries. Part of the Consultative Group for International Research in Agriculture (CGIAR), the centre partners with science and development institutions to inform, and advocate for, science-based policies that encourage agroforestry. The centre publishes articles, policy briefs and multimedia, as well as information on its research and projects, including the REDD-ALERT project that aims to provide policy options for emissions reduction.
