Assisted natural regeneration of forests (ANR)

This website, hosted by the FAO, publishes information on assisted natural regeneration (ANR) of forests. It provides examples of ANR activities including suppressing weeds, building fire breaks and establishing patrol groups to prevent illegal logging. It also links to further reading and lists relevant FAO projects.

Environment and Energy

Part of the UN Development Programme, the Environment and Energy group work in six areas: water governance, frameworks and strategies for sustainable development, sustainable energy, sustainable land management, biodiversity and chemicals management.

The group publishes information on its projects in each of these areas as well case study analyses, policy papers, toolkits for practitioners, press information and links to external websites.

FAO Forestry

The forestry department of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) works with governments, international organisations, nongovernmental groups and individual communities to promote sustainable forest management. It offers technical support to developing countries, provides information and advice on forestry, and hosts multi-stakeholder technical and policy discussions. FAO Forestry publishes facts and figures on forests and forestry for some 200 countries, as well as papers, books and reports such as the biannual State of the World's Forests.

Global Biodiversity Information Facility

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility is an international, government-funded initiative focused on providing free and open access to biodiversity data online for scientific research, conservation and sustainable development.

The website provides an Internet-based index of primary biodiversity data, such as museum specimens and field observations of plants and animals in nature; community-developed tools for formatting and sharing data; and capacity building through training, including access to international experts and mentoring programmes. The website links to relevant reports and news, and publishes information in different languages including English, Chinese and Korean.

International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2ie)

The International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2ie) is a research and training institute specialising in water, energy and the environment. It provides educational facilities to develop research capacity for innovation and entrepreneurship on the African continent, focusing on water and environmental management; solar energy and biofuels; eco-material; and civil engineering. The 2ie website publishes information on available courses including how to apply and admission requirements, as well as upcoming conferences and workshops, jobs and internships, and access to online libraries.

Stockholm Environment Institute

The Stockholm Environment Institute is an international not-for-profit research organisation that aims to promote sustainable development through scientific analysis that supports decision-making on the national and international level. It focuses on four broad themes: reducing climate risks; managing land, water and air resources; improving governance; and developing new visions and pathways to development. The website provides free access to the institute's publications, describes current projects and links to useful modelling or policy tools such as LEAP (the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning system) and IPAT-S.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bhutan

UNDP activities in Bhutan fall within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals. More specifically, UNDP's support in the area of energy and environment in Bhutan focuses on national conservation strategies and policies, local conservation initiatives that contribute to rural community development and poverty reduction, national capacity to address global environmental concerns, and natural disaster risk reduction.
