Thailand has announced that projected field trials of genetically modified (GM) crops will not take place. The move follows widespread public opposition to the government’s announcement that the trials were to go ahead.

Instead, a panel will hear expert arguments for and against GM crops. It will determine whether GM organisms should be partially or openly allowed in Thailand. The Science and Technology Ministry will also support an information campaign on GM organisms.

In 2001, the Thai government banned GM crop trials, a decision which was overturned a little over one week ago. Current law forbids the sale of GM seeds and products containing more than five per cent of genetically modified ingredients must be clearly labelled.
